  • Let go of the unnecessary... In 18ish years of formal schooling, including STEM programs, college prep, charters, AP classes, and honors... Never once have I diagrammed a sentence. Nor do I understand it's purpose. My teen writes papers with the help of Grammarly Premium. This has been 10x easier and wildly more successful than our struggle through grammar lessons in lower grades. What have I learned in 10 years of homeschooling?   • Performative allyship while homeschooling 🌈 . . . . I feel like the "trend" in homeschooling right now is to update curriculum to be more inclusive. Is this a bad thing? Not inherently. However, what I'm too often seeing is curriculum updates and booklists featuring Black and POC characters and stories...written by white people. "Doing the work" means putting in that bit of extra effort to amplify the voices of those you're studying, and making the time and effort to evaluate not just your content, but your sources... #homeschooltogether
  • My 5yo doesn't know all her letter sounds... She also doesn't give a damn. She has no interest in reading. STOP 🛑 Read that again. She has no interest in READING. But she LOVES books. She loves hidden pictures and the I-Spy series. She likes to spot differences and looking for Waldo's lost items. She prefers flipping through graphic novels and comic books to regular picture books. She likes maps and atlases and timelines. She likes workbooks and will get anyone nearby to read her the directions if she can't figure it out. She would listen to me read 617 books a day if I allowed it -- so a huge shout out to @vooks, @hoopladigital, @overdrive_libs, @epic4kids, @scribd, and @spotifypodcasts who manage that for me. Am I worried about a lifelong struggle with literacy? No. She can manipulate numbers faster than most people in this house. Science is her thing. She's crafty. All things in due time.... #letthemplay
  • A Day in the Life....🎨 More days than not, the girls are exploring things through art...... We've been reading Zoey & Sassafras: Grumplets and Pests, while exploring ladybugs, talking about feelings, and plotting their desktop gardens for the upcoming equinox -- after last year's butterflies I'm good on doing that project again 🤣 Our go-to learning resources these days as we lean into interested led unit studies? Classes on @outschool, @torchlightcurriculum, and @soulsparklettes art with "Miss Julie".   • Outschool is our jam....💻 At least once a week someone asks my opinion about using Outschool. In short, we love it! My kids are used to taking classes once a month in person, but that came to a screeching halt last year -- #ThanksCovid -- and hasn't resumed. The kids have been using Outschool regularly since 2018 and we've only ever disliked two classes. My tips: 1. Read the reviews. Especially the bad ones. 2. Research the teachers -- many run blogs, education sites, IG pages, etc. 3. Keep your really young kids away from classes that hold more than 6ish kids. I've yet to see this go well. 4. (added) Watch your age ranges. Young kids can slow down a class for older kids and vice versa. 5. ASK YOUR KIDS for their input. Just because they love Legos, doesn't mean they want to take a class. 6. Look for trial classes -- if a subject is new to your child or you aren't sure about taking longer term classes, see if the teacher offers the same series as a single class. 7. Reach out to teachers. Never be afraid to request new times, dates, modifications, age exceptions, etc. The worst they can say is no, and if the request is reasonable I've mostly been given an enthusiastic yes.
